How the Midwest grew into the largest Manufacturing Hub in the Country
When most people think of the Midwestern United States, they likely think of fields upon fields of crops, extensive agriculture, and the occasional city dotted about. However, over the past several decades the Midwest region has become a large hub for all different types of manufacturing, with several of the area’s major cities leading the way towards maintaining a strong manufacturing sector in the region.
The Origins of the Rust Belt
In the 60s and 70s, a large region of the Midwest became known as the Rust Belt due to the sheer amount of manufacturing plants and factories located in the area. Access to the Great Lakes and several other canals and rivers made transporting finished goods and raw materials a much simpler and more efficient process. Plus, the region was incredibly mineral rich in its prime, providing more access to necessary materials like coal and steel. Automotive manufacturing in the Midwest was an especially big part of CNC machining across the region, and continued to be even in the next few decades when manufacturing began to decline.
The Resurgence of Manufacturing in the Midwest
Though the late 90s and early 2000s saw significant decline in manufacturing across the region, recent global events have caused a push for reshoring–supporting U.S. based businesses, bringing facilities and resources back from overseas to re-strengthen the supply chain. The global pandemic especially showed just how fragile the supply chain can be–and how crucial our manufacturing hub really is. And despite the setbacks, the Midwest has continued to be a strong and significant source of industry over the past several decades, with much of the nation’s manufacturing concentrated in the Midwest area.
